(Yahoo!) - R&B singer Sharon Jones has been diagnosed with stage-one bile-duct cancer and has delayed the next album and tour by her band Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings while she receives treatment for the disease.
The 57-year-old vocalist will undergo surgery and expects a lengthy but full recovery. The group's sixth album, Give the People What They Want, was previously scheduled for release on August 6.
"Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on," Jones said in a statement on her official site. "We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast, and the doctors say it's operable and curable."
Bile-duct cancer is a rare condition that affects between 2,000 and 3,000 people a year, according to the American Cancer Society. The disease is caused by anomalous cell growth in a four-to-five inch long tube that connects the liver to the small intestine.
"I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover," Jones said. "I'll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!"
